Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a group of inherited and sometimes fatal diseases that destroy the nerves controlling voluntary movement such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, as well as swallowing.
· SMA is the number 1 killer of children under the age of 2
· 1 in every 6000 live births are affected with SMA
· 1 in every 40 people are carriers of the SMA gene
· SMA has no age or ethnic preference
