We are very excited about the 15th Annual KDK SMASH SMA GOLF CLASSIC brought to you by the Arizona Chapter Families of SMA. This year marks our 15th Anniversary for holding this golf tournament! Did you know that FSMA is the largest private funder of research for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) diseases and provides much needed patient support and networking for families affected by this devastating disease? Well, you may have never heard of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, but it is quite common, here are some facts about SMA:
· SMA is a neuromuscular disease that attacks the motor neurons located in the spine that control voluntary movement, such as crawling, walking, head and neck control as well as swallowing.
· SMA is the #1 Genetic Killer of children under the age of 2.
· There are over 7 million carriers in the U.S.
· 1 in every 6000 live births is affected with SMA.
· There is no treatment or cure.
The Arizona Chapter Families of SMA was started by two families who became personally involved after their children were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. They had a sincere desire to learn more about SMA and wanted to find a way to raise funds to help educate and support other families in Arizona afflicted with this disease and joined the national chapters Families of SMA. In May 1997, the AZ Chapter held the First Annual KDK Smash SMA Golf Tournament fund raiser. The Golf Tournament was a huge success and this tradition still continues today. The AZ Chapter Families of SMA is very proud to announce that we will be celebrating the
15th Annual KDK SMASH SMA GOLF CLASSIC on May 6, 2011!
